Dr. Attila Szijártó was born in 1976 in Budapest. He graduated summa cum laude from the Faculty of General Medicine at Semmelweis University in 2001. Since then, he has worked at Semmelweis University’s Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology (formerly 1st Department of Surgery, prior to a structural reorganization), where he currently serves as Professor and Director. In 2007, he obtained his Ph.D. degree summa cum laude with a dissertation entitled “Possibilities of Increasing Ischemic Tolerance in Liver Surgery”, and in 2016 he successfully defended his D.Sc. thesis at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, expanding on this research. In 2015, he completed his habilitation at Semmelweis University. In 2019, he earned an MSc in Health Management at the Health Services Management Training Centre of Semmelweis University’s Faculty of Public Service. His main field of interest is the surgery of liver, biliary tract, and pancreatic diseases. He played a pioneering role in launching the robotic surgery program in Hungary and performed the country’s first surgical intervention with robotic technology in 2022. In addition to several shorter study visits abroad (London, Amsterdam), he spent an extended period in Japan, working as a fellow at Kyoto University’s Liver Surgery and Transplantation Center (2011–2012). Alongside his clinical work, he revived the Experimental Surgery Unit, which he led between 2003 and 2020. As an educator, he regularly delivers lectures and practical courses in both Hungarian and English. Since 2018, he has been President of the Scientific Students’ Association at Semmelweis University, responsible for talent management, for which he was awarded the Master Teacher distinction in 2021. He currently heads the Operative Division of the Semmelweis University Doctoral School. He has chaired numerous national and international congresses and maintains extensive domestic and international collaborations. In addition to his research, he places particular emphasis on improving the quality of surgical training. Motivated by this commitment, he co-founded the Section of Young Surgeons (FiSeSz), where he served as president for three years, also presiding over its annual congresses. He actively mentors surgical trainees and, since 2018, has chaired the national Surgical Board. He is the elected President of the Hungarian Surgical Society and a member of the Senate of Semmelweis University.
