Belgian-born Bruno van Pottelsberghe studied at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, specializing in business, economics, and international relations. He earned his PhD in 1998 after holding research positions at Japan’s METI in Tokyo (1995) and at Columbia University in New York (1996). At his alma mater, he served as Dean of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management—part of ULB—from 2007 to 2011 and again since 2021, and has been Academic Director of the Executive MBA program since 2014. In addition, since 2004 he has chaired ULB’s Patent Evaluation Committee and acted as advisor to the Rector. He is the initiator and founder of the Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management Network (QTEM), has carried out numerous peer-review visits for international university accreditation bodies, and gained non-academic experience at the OECD in Paris (1997–1999) and as Chief Economist at the European Patent Office (2005–2007). Bruno van Pottelsberghe’s main research areas include the economics of innovation, patent systems, intellectual property rights, and technology transfer. He has achieved outstanding scientific results, being the author or co-author of more than 60 scholarly articles, the author or co-author of five books, and co-editor of another. He has extensive teaching experience at the bachelor’s, master’s, Executive MBA, and doctoral levels.
