Media researcher and communications expert

Tamás Tófalvy, PhD is a media researcher and communications expert. He is Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Communication, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME GTK), and Head of the Digital Media specialization within the MA in Communication and Media Studies program. He earned his PhD at BME and later completed his habilitation at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). His research focuses on the interactions between digital media technologies and society, with particular interest in streaming platforms, popular music, and journalism. In recent years, he led the MODEM project, which explores the history of digital media in Hungary, as well as research on Spotify and Facebook usage patterns in the country. He has been a visiting researcher at several Hungarian and international institutions, including the CEU Center for Media, Data and Society, Columbia University in New York (as a Fulbright Scholar), Indiana University Bloomington, and Institut Nicod in Paris. His international publications have appeared in First Monday, Media History, Internet Histories, New Media and Society, and in volumes published by Palgrave Macmillan and Routledge. In addition to his academic work, he has professional experience in the media industry, having worked as a journalist and editor at Kreatív and Kreatív Online, Hungary’s leading media trade publications.
