Dr. Luca Gőbölyös
photo artist, associate professor
Hungarian photographic artist, born in Budapest. He began his photographic studies in 1988–1989 at the Paris studio of Jean-Loup Charmet, then continued at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, where he earned his MA degree in photography in 1994. In 1997, he was awarded a British Council scholarship, which enabled him to complete a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree at the University of Brighton in 1998. He received his doctoral degree in 2009 and earned his habilitation in 2016, both at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. He has successfully participated in numerous national and international competitions, and his work has been exhibited around the world—in countries such as the United Kingdom, Austria, the United States, Estonia, Finland, France, India, Poland, Germany, Romania, and Slovenia—at venues including Expo Chicago, the Ludwig Museum (Budapest), the Istanbul Biennale, the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), Vienna Art Fair, and Walter Bischoff Galerie (Berlin). In 2007, he was awarded the Balogh Rudolf Prize. Since 2009, he has been serving as an associate professor and played a key role in establishing the photography program at the Budapest Metropolitan University. From 2024, he has been involved in founding the photography department at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pécs, and as of February 2025, he will serve as the Director of the Institute of Design and Media Arts. From the outset, his approach to photography has been broad and conceptual, characterized by the use of various photographic techniques. His work reflects on the genre-specific aspects of photography, combining traditional tools with unique technical methods and materials.
